PERSONALITY
Having grown up as a member of a Dalish clan, one of the most prominent things about Lavellan is her kindness and the urge to share with the people around her. The Dalish have to protect one another and fend for themselves in groups in the forests and outskirts of civilisation; this meant hunting for each other, protecting each other and sharing histories with one another. Growing up in an environment where the clan took care of one another has fostered a deep well of kindness in Lavellan that has continued into her adult life, despite her new positions of power in a world completely different from what she was used to.

She is extremely passionate, however, in ways that go beyond simple kindness. Her curiosity is one of the most obvious things about her upon first meeting her; she asks question upon question and, more often than not, any answers that she gets will just make her want to learn more. When speaking to her companions she probed for anything she could learn, especially from those like Dorian and Iron Bull who were from cultures completely different from anything she had seen or experienced before, or Solas who knew more about Dalish and elven history than she had been aware of.

This passion also lends itself to her mile wide protective streak. When it comes to the people she cares for and the people she trusts there is very little that she wouldn’t do; she has ventured far and wide in order to accommodate the requests of people she loves, and she would do it all again if she was asked to. The people she cares for become her family and, because of that, Lavellan would risk her life for them without thought for the consequences of her actions. In her mind, these people are worth her life, worth defending and protecting, and if that means a sacrifice then she is willing to make it.

Though she appears a calm, even-tempered person, Lavellan’s anger can burn viciously if given the chance. She’s slow to let herself slip into rage, but when it comes it’s as dangerous as the magic she uses, particularly in the cases where someone she loves might be at risk. When angry she is snappy and rude and pushes at people to get them away from her and, when she comes back down, she is quieter and apologetic for it. She loathes her anger and doesn’t want to give into the urge, but sometimes there are things that mean that she has to let her anger get the better of her.

Alongside this comes her forgiving nature. If someone has wronged her she is quick to allow them to have some of her trust back and will seek the truth of why they had hurt her in the way they had - when Solas took her face markings and broke off their relationship she wanted to know why and to understand rather than allowing herself to just be angry about it, though that came later. She feels as though if she can understand a person’s motivations she is better able to understand why they have hurt her and, therefore, make an attempt at some forgiveness.

This doesn’t mean that she will forgive everyone at face value, of course. It is difficult to earn her trust completely - she is a Dalish elf at heart, and her love for her people and her culture runs deep - but once it has been given it is very difficult to lose it.

Though she might once have been a ‘bleeding-heart’, becoming Inquisitor had toughened her - she wasn’t impractical before, but she had learned life lessons. She might be quick to forgive, but she doesn’t forget, and those are things that will stay with her for the rest of her life. She is stubborn when it comes to holding onto things, even if she wants to move on and allow for some kind of redemption. She holds the same thought when it comes to judging people - she wants people to earn the right to be forgiven, to explain their actions, to prove that they can be better rather than ending them completely.

Altogether, Lavellan is a kind, decent person, but she has been hardened by her role as an Inquisitor and Herald. Where once she might have let people take advantage of her kindness she has become sterner and more careful where she puts her trust. She takes her responsibilities incredibly seriously and is just as studious as she is careful; she reads, as much as she can, and devours any and all new information offered to her. She doesn’t make decisions lightly and wants to know all the facts before she goes into any plan simply because she wants to make the best, right decision, rather than the quickest or the easiest.
